Roche Senior Software Architect — Vienna Onsite
Lead end-to-end mobile, backend, and cloud architecture for Roche’s digital health and medical-device products in Vienna. Advance AI-assisted engineering practices within regulated healthcare software.
Description
- Own end-to-end architecture across native mobile, backend, and the navify cloud
- Define application-to-cloud integration boundaries and system designs
- Create technical designs, architecture decision records, and C4 models
- Balance cost, risk, time to value, and reuse when making architectural decisions
- Separate regulated and non-regulated components to support medical-device compliance
- Develop AI-augmented software development lifecycle practices
- Use agentic tools such as Claude and ChatGPT for design, prototyping, documentation, and review
- Establish standards and safeguards for reliable, accountable AI-assisted development
- Design modular, well-bounded Java and Spring backend services
- Define navify Platform data and integration flows covering identity, consent, notifications, AI, and FHIR
- Help create reusable product blueprints and shared mobile and navify foundations
- Provide squads with technical direction and help resolve architecture decisions
- Collaborate with mobile specialists and the Cloud and DevOps sub-chapter
- Lead design reviews, pairing sessions, and mentoring
- Maintain documentation that supports audit readiness
- Influence technical direction within the shared architecture capability
- Build prototypes to reduce design risk when needed
- Travel approximately 10%, primarily between the Vienna and Sant Cugat sites and for the Roche architecture community
Requirements
- Proven experience as a software architect designing mobile, backend, and cloud systems
- Sufficient native mobile expertise to work effectively with mobile specialists
- Strong background in cloud and backend architecture
- Proficiency with Java and Spring
- Experience with modular and domain-driven design
- Knowledge of APIs and integration
- Understanding of cloud-native patterns and DevOps
- Experience with CI/CD
- Experience using agentic AI tools such as Claude Code
- Ability to assess AI-generated output and apply AI across design, development, and review
- Ability to create technical designs, architecture decision records, and C4 models
- Experience in regulated or safety-critical environments
- Strong communication skills and the ability to lead through expertise rather than authority
- Comfort making trade-offs and building prototypes; FHIR and healthcare data standards, identity and consent platforms, reference architecture or platform teams, and deeper SaMD experience are additional advantages.
