Description

  • Act as a hands-on technical authority and trusted advisor for Walmart+ engineering teams
  • Lead discovery, technical strategy, and solution design for membership, engagement, benefits, personalization, and omnichannel initiatives
  • Define and evolve secure, resilient architectures for distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven platforms
  • Convert business and customer needs into technical strategies, roadmaps, milestones, and measurable engineering outcomes
  • Guide architecture decisions across customer value, quality, cost, delivery timelines, maintainability, and platform evolution
  • Design and review systems built with Java, Spring Boot, Node.js, Kafka, NoSQL databases, and cloud-native technologies
  • Lead design reviews, technical deep dives, code reviews, and architecture discussions
  • Establish coding standards, design patterns, testing approaches, observability practices, and secure development principles
  • Contribute to critical code, prototypes, proofs of concept, technical spikes, and production issue resolution
  • Strengthen reliability through telemetry, monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, performance engineering, disaster recovery, and operational readiness
  • Advance automation, CI/CD, DevOps practices, continuous delivery, and developer productivity
  • Collaborate with Product Management, UX/UI, Quality Engineering, SRE, DevOps, Security, Data, and Architecture teams
  • Produce technical documentation, architecture decision records, diagrams, presentations, and implementation guidance
  • Mentor senior engineers and technical leads while encouraging learning and innovation
  • Shape technical standards and reusable patterns across Walmart+ and Walmart Global Tech
  • Investigate emerging technologies, including agentic AI applications
  • Support hiring, technical assessments, hackathons, demo days, and architecture forums
  • Lead technical response during production incidents and ensure lasting corrective actions

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related field plus 5 years of software engineering experience, or 7 years of related software engineering experience
  • Typically 15 or more years of software engineering experience focused on large-scale distributed systems
  • Prior experience as a Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer, Lead Engineer, Architect, or in an equivalent technical leadership position
  • Substantial hands-on experience designing, developing, and delivering software products and platforms serving large user populations
  • Advanced command of software design, distributed systems, microservices, event-driven architecture, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, and performance engineering
  • Strong hands-on Java and Spring Boot experience; Node.js and JavaScript or TypeScript experience is highly desirable
  • Deep experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming technologies
  • Experience with NoSQL databases, data modeling, and trade-offs involving consistency, availability, partitioning, replication, and scale
  • Experience developing cloud-native services on Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform
  • Strong knowledge of DevOps and CI/CD, Git, Maven or comparable build tools, automated testing, release management, and infrastructure automation
  • Experience using Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm
  • Excellent capabilities in debugging, performance analysis, production support, and incident management
  • Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, distributed tracing, structured logging, and service-level indicators
  • Ability to influence without formal authority and align multiple teams around a technical direction
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong judgment and the ability to balance competing priorities
  • Experience working with globally distributed teams and products
  • Knowledge of risk analysis, trade-off methods, coding standards, secure coding, software design principles, and development guidelines
  • Knowledge of PCI and other applicable compliance requirements
  • Knowledge of telemetry, observability, service health, capacity management, and operational readiness
  • Knowledge of Secure Software Development Lifecycle frameworks, tools, and controls
  • Awareness of WCAG 2.2 AA and accessible digital experiences
