- Build core backend and distributed-systems components
- Develop durable execution, state management, messaging, storage, concurrency, and fault-tolerance capabilities
- Create low-latency, dependable systems that operate at substantial scale
- Strengthen the Restate runtime’s performance, scalability, and resilience
- Shape the architecture and ongoing development of Restate’s core platform
- Design systems for dependable operation in real-world production environments
- Investigate and resolve complex distributed-systems and production problems
- Advance observability, testing, failure recovery, and operational reliability
- Contribute across application software and infrastructure
- Collaborate with engineering teams building production systems on Restate
- Convert real-world technical challenges into product enhancements
- Create reference implementations, integrations, and supporting tools as needed
- Participate in technical discussions, design reviews, and architectural decisions
- Transform recurring technical problems into reusable systems, tooling, and documentation
- Help establish engineering practices as the team and product grow
Requirements
- Substantial backend engineering experience developing production systems
- Experience with distributed systems, event-driven architectures, or systems involving concurrency, state, messaging, and failure handling
- Strong proficiency in at least one backend language; Rust, Go, Java, C++, or comparable languages are especially relevant
- Experience designing, building, and operating production software at scale
- Strong knowledge of software reliability, performance, and system design
- Experience with distributed databases, workflow engines, messaging systems, or infrastructure software is beneficial
- Experience with Rust or another systems programming language is beneficial
- Experience with Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure is beneficial
- Experience with storage engines, networking, or low-level systems is beneficial
- Experience rearchitecting or migrating production systems is beneficial
- Open-source contributions or experience building developer-facing infrastructure is beneficial
- Clear communication of technical ideas through design documents, architecture discussions, and code
- Strong ownership and the ability to succeed in an early-stage environment
- Ability to work directly with engineers to understand and solve practical technical problems
