API Architect (Apigee X and AI Gateway) – San Diego Onsite

Description

  • Own the strategy, governance, and ongoing evolution of Axos Bank’s enterprise API platform as a secure AI gateway
  • Design and operate Apigee X governance for REST and SOAP services, LLM proxies, and MCP servers
  • Set and enforce solution standards, risk tiers, approval and promotion gates, observability requirements, and compliance attestations
  • Shape enterprise API and AI consumption practices covering model routing, token-aware rate limits, semantic caching, and LLM cost attribution
  • Establish MCP server controls for authentication, auditing, rate limiting, and policy enforcement
  • Deploy AI safety measures for prompt injection, PII detection and redaction, jailbreaks, and response filtering
  • Define LLM API standards for provider abstraction, failover, logging, and red-team testing
  • Develop security and compliance protocols aligned with financial services regulations and emerging AI guidance
  • Design scalable microservice and AI-agent integration architectures
  • Build performance, reliability, and observability strategies incorporating token telemetry, model-latency tracking, and SLO management
  • Work with the Center of Excellence on enablement patterns for citizen developers and AI agents
  • Implement Apigee X proxies, shared flows, Model Armor templates, and MCP server integrations
  • Oversee performance management, professional development, team capability building, resource allocation, and project planning
  • Coach engineers on Apigee X policies, MCP protocol patterns, and LLM integration practices
  • Provide hands-on engineering for Apigee proxies, shared flows, MCP integrations, and AI policy configuration as needed

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of enterprise API architecture experience, including 1 or more years with Apigee X or another AI-capable gateway
  • Practical knowledge of Apigee platforms, including proxies, shared flows, policy chains, environments, and Google Cloud integrations
  • Production experience designing, deploying, or governing LLM API integrations such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Vertex AI, or AWS Bedrock
  • Working knowledge of Model Context Protocol, including server patterns, tool and resource exposure, stdio and HTTP/SSE transports, and authentication models
  • Understanding of AI security threats—including prompt injection, tool-call data exfiltration, indirect injection, and jailbreaks—and gateway controls that address them
  • Demonstrated success delivering work across multiple functions
  • Experience with Python, Java, or Node.js, plus the ability to read and modify Apigee policy XML and JavaScript and prototype LLM client and MCP server code
  • Experience with microservices and cloud architecture, especially Google Cloud services including Apigee X, Vertex AI, IAM, and VPC
  • Advanced knowledge of OAuth, OIDC, mTLS, JWT, and API security protocols, including their use in AI-agent authentication and delegated access
  • Experience designing CI/CD pipelines for API proxies and policy artifacts with promotion controls for AI-impacting changes
  • Preferred certifications include Apigee Certified Professional; Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect or Professional Machine Learning Engineer; AWS, Azure, or GCP cloud architecture certification; TOGAF or comparable enterprise architecture certification; and an AI governance or responsible AI credential such as IAPP AIGP
  • Preferred qualifications include financial services technology experience with BSA, GLBA, CCPA, and SR 11-7 model-risk considerations for generative AI; hands-on Apigee X AI/ML proxy, Model Armor, and Vertex AI work; production MCP server experience; governance across traditional and AI workloads; Terraform and API deployment tooling expertise; GitHub Actions or equivalent; LLM evaluation, prompt management, and red-team experience; and practical engineering across API and AI domains
