Senior Database Engineer, PostgreSQL and AWS Aurora

- Own PostgreSQL and AWS Aurora expertise for Skye’s operational database
- Manage and optimize a large relational schema spanning hundreds of tables, high-volume operational data, and extensive historical records
- Review database changes for correctness, performance, safety, indexing, grants, triggers, foreign keys, and migration quality
- Investigate and resolve production database problems such as slow queries, lock contention, blocking transactions, runaway queries, replication lag, and performance regressions
- Optimize queries and indexes for large tables, reporting workloads, assignment and routing processes, mobile API payloads, and internal operational dashboards
- Automate recurring database maintenance and operational work, including repacking, cleanup, monitoring checks, and scheduled reports
- Partner with Infrastructure on database refreshes, backups, restores, staging, and release processes
- Work with Infrastructure, Software Development, and Data Science teams on reliability, performance, reporting, analytics, and operational data requirements
- Maintain secure access patterns for reporting users, Metabase, developers, and tables containing sensitive or personally identifiable information
- Support accounting data flows involving invoices, payments, billing accounts, vendor and payee records, and ERP integration tables

- At least five years of experience with production relational databases; eight or more years is advantageous
- Strong production experience with PostgreSQL, preferably including AWS Aurora PostgreSQL
- Advanced SQL proficiency covering joins, CTEs, query plans, indexes, constraints, triggers, transactions, and lock behavior
- Experience diagnosing high-volume databases with large tables, long-lived schemas, and real production workloads
- Ability to separate inherent query cost from lock contention, blocking, poor execution plans, missing indexes, and excessive application call volume
- Meticulous approach to reviewing schema migrations and operational database changes
- Experience partnering with application engineers on database-backed application design and performance
- Sound judgment regarding access control, personally identifiable information, production safety, and release risk
- Clear written communication when documenting findings, tradeoffs, and recommended fixes
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a software-related field preferred
- Master’s degree is advantageous
- Experience with Linux, Bash, scripting, cron, or other orchestration and automation tools for database maintenance and operational workflows is highly desirable
- Java experience, particularly with MyBatis, Spring, or comparable data-access frameworks, is highly desirable
- Experience with reporting workloads, BI tools, Metabase-style access patterns, PostGIS, or geospatial query performance is highly desirable
- Experience with AWS monitoring tools, CloudWatch, RDS or Aurora Performance Insights, pg_stat_statements, pgAdmin, or comparable observability tools is highly desirable
- Experience using AI coding agents such as Codex or Claude, or willingness to use AI-assisted development tools in daily engineering work, is highly desirable
- Experience with NetSuite, Boomi, ERP or iPaaS integrations, accounting, billing, accounts receivable or payable, payments, invoices, credit memos, customer deposits, vendor payments, or working-table integration patterns is a secondary bonus
