Lead AI Research Scientist II – Digital Safety (Remote, United States)
Lead independent AI safety testing and evaluation programs for UL Research Institutes, with a focus on identifying and reducing risks from AI systems. The role combines research leadership, proposal development, experimentation, and technical analysis across digital safety domains.
Tavsif
- Direct multidisciplinary research spanning natural language processing, computer vision, signal processing, and AI reasoning
- Lead AI safety studies from literature review and experimental design through engineering, data collection, analysis, and documentation
- Create and manage independent testing and evaluation programs designed to reduce public harm from AI systems
- Develop competitive research proposals using Heilmeier criteria to establish scope, methods, and deliverables
- Act as principal investigator for Digital Safety independent testing and evaluation initiatives
- Use AI and software engineering expertise to deliver and oversee research programs
- Interpret experimental findings, diagnose issues, devise solutions, and assess technical specifications
- Develop and carry out procedures that verify testing and evaluation outcomes
- Create research challenges and improve them using DSRI evaluation tools
- Organize workshops at major AI safety conferences and present comparative research findings
- Track emerging technologies through academic papers, scientific publications, and conferences
- Support department initiatives and cross-functional projects
Talablar
- Broad working knowledge of artificial intelligence and software engineering
- Proven success obtaining research funding through competitive proposals
- Experience writing successful proposals for prominent research workshops
- Record of earning invitations to deliver keynote presentations
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities
- Advanced capability in AI engineering, software engineering, and data analysis
- Ability to work effectively with researchers, engineers, colleagues, and external collaborators
- Ability to publish findings at leading academic conferences
- PhD in Computer Science with a concentration in the relevant AI specialty and at least 8 years of related research experience; or
- Master’s degree in Computer Science with a concentration in the relevant AI specialty and at least 10 years of related research experience; or
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a concentration in the relevant AI specialty and at least 12 years of related research experience
