Senior Data Engineer, Databricks

Lead Databricks pipelines, governance, and platform operations for Ellis Porter’s immigration law practice and responsible AI initiatives. Build reliable, trusted data products for teams across the firm.

  • Build and maintain Databricks ingestion pipelines that bring in data from Ellis Porter business systems.
  • Automate data quality checks and reconcile sources to find missing, inaccurate, or duplicate records.
  • Design and build silver and gold data layers.
  • Deliver governed data products for reporting, cross-system matching, and identity resolution.
  • Manage daily platform operations, including job scheduling, monitoring, alerts, data freshness, access controls, and cost optimization.
  • Maintain runbooks, test recovery procedures, and document platform support knowledge.
  • Manage CI/CD pipelines and deployments across development, testing, and production with Azure DevOps.
  • Coordinate with Ellis Porter’s IT vendor on Azure infrastructure needs beyond the data platform.
  • Protect systems of record, apply appropriate user access, and verify licensing and platform constraints before deployment.
  • Work with business stakeholders to turn their needs into practical, reliable data solutions.
  • Create and implement confidentiality, retention, least-privilege access, and audit controls for sensitive client and matter data.
  • Support scoped AI and partner pilots with data masking, evaluation datasets, and human approval.
  • Assess the existing Databricks platform, find ways to improve it, and help grow the data function.
  • Work with the Manager of Data Services and Products and business, application, IT, and security stakeholders on architecture and build-versus-buy decisions.
  • Carry out other duties assigned by management.

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least four years of data engineering experience.
  • At least two years of hands-on experience building and operating Databricks solutions in production.
  • Experience with multi-task Lakeflow Jobs over Delta tables governed by Unity Catalog.
  • Declarative Automation Bundles (formerly Databricks Asset Bundles) or equivalent infrastructure-as-code deployment experience is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to explain a production pipeline you built, including design choices, failures, and operational challenges.
  • Clear communication with nontechnical partners and ability to connect engineering decisions to business impact.
  • Proficiency in Python, including testing with pytest and packaging.
  • PySpark experience is preferred.
  • Strong SQL and dimensional modeling skills, including serving governed datasets to BI tools.
  • Experience building REST API and SaaS ingestion pipelines, including handling pagination, rate limits, schema drift, and credential rotation.
  • Experience with Git-based CI/CD workflows.
  • Azure DevOps experience is a plus.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools, including reviewing, testing, and validating generated code before deployment.
  • Experience with Lakeflow pipelines, managed connectors, entity resolution, or record linkage is a plus.
  • Experience managing Azure resources for a data platform, ideally with infrastructure-as-code, is a plus.
  • All work must be performed within the United States.
