Litigation Counsel

Advise NiSource on litigation, claims, investigations, and disputes across its six-state utility operations. Shape case strategy, manage outside counsel, and support emergency response.

Aprašymas

  • Advise business partners on complex legal matters across NiSource’s six-state operating footprint.
  • Counsel on litigation, contract breaches, claims, investigations, emergency incidents, subpoenas, and other high-risk matters.
  • Develop and carry out case and trial strategies, including approaches to resolution.
  • Guide complex litigation, claims, and disputes before litigation begins.
  • Oversee outside counsel and expert witnesses, including matter budgets and discovery coordination.
  • Resolve disputes, manage costs, reduce future risk, and strengthen business practices.
  • Provide practical, proactive legal advice and address legal issues as they arise.
  • Identify emerging business and regulatory issues, both inside and outside the company.
  • Select, supervise, and manage outside counsel for assigned matters.
  • Keep business partners informed about matter status.
  • Review and revise legal documents.
  • Negotiate contractual issues and legal disputes with external parties.
  • Train business partners on legal matters.
  • Manage assigned litigation, significant claims, investigations, subpoenas, and pre-litigation disputes from initial assessment through resolution.
  • Coordinate case and resolution strategy, outside counsel, experts, discovery, and matter budgets.
  • Support emergency and post-incident response, preserve evidence, and transition matters to ongoing claims or litigation management.
  • Serve as enterprise-wide legal counsel protecting NiSource across its six-state operating footprint.

Reikalavimai

  • Hold a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Have 1–3 years of experience independently handling matters.
  • Manage case responsibilities with some supervision.
  • Demonstrate exemplary personal and professional integrity and business ethics.
  • Apply pragmatic business judgment and recognize the business consequences of legal advice.
  • Use strong legal reasoning to apply abstract legal concepts and make timely, well-founded decisions.
  • Work efficiently under deadlines and time pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exercise sound judgment.
  • Build trust, respect, and confidence with business partners through strong interpersonal skills.
  • Communicate effectively in oral, written, and presentation settings.
  • Negotiate effectively.
  • Understand state and federal laws, including how laws and agencies interact.

  • Be available for emergency coverage, overtime, and some travel.
  • Preferred: at least two years of civil litigation experience.
  • Preferred: experience developing case and trial strategies and evaluating complex claims.
  • Preferred: experience with emergency or incident response and evidence preservation.
  • Preferred: ability to provide dedicated 24/7 legal support during assigned on-call rotations.
  • Preferred: experience managing outside counsel, experts, and matter budgets.
  • Preferred: experience with environmental matters.
  • Preferred: experience in utilities or another regulated industry.
  • Preferred: experience at a law firm or publicly traded corporation.
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States.
