  • Prepare sites and oversee safe digital field surveys, from data capture through quality checks.
  • Set up, maintain and secure field-survey equipment.
  • Maintain the accuracy of field-survey data and digitised records throughout their production.
  • Conduct field surveys and other on-site data collection when needed.
  • Digitise drawn site records and process and present archaeological data with CAD, GIS or other geospatial software.
  • Use ESRI tools, especially ArcGIS Pro, to process and query data and publish GIS and web map services.
  • Help train staff and develop their survey, GIS and CAD skills.
  • Arrange equipment hire, raise purchase orders and liaise with external hire companies.
  • Coordinate the allocation of survey instruments to staff and projects.
  • Support large, complex projects and contribute to their quality assurance.
  • Build effective working relationships with fieldwork, geomatics, support and administrative teams, as well as clients.
  • Follow organisational policies and meet fire safety, health and safety, and risk-assessment requirements.

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in archaeology or a related subject.
  • Relevant field archaeology experience on evaluations, watching briefs and excavations.
  • Strong understanding of archaeological survey principles.
  • Extensive knowledge of ESRI software, with proficiency in ArcGIS Pro.
  • Experience conducting archaeological field surveys with GNSS and total station instruments, preferably Leica.
  • Experience managing and processing field-survey data.
  • Ability to clearly describe observations and interpretations from archaeological survey work.
  • Strong IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and Access.
  • Commitment to professional archaeological standards.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for work, including occasional overnight stays.
  • Relevant experience teaching, training or mentoring others.
  • Experience contributing to project reports, publications, research or outreach projects.
  • Experience in photography and photogrammetry.
  • Experience surveying archaeological buildings and earthworks.
  • Ability to configure and troubleshoot Leica GNSS and total station instruments.
  • Experience with remote data-capture systems, including terrestrial and airborne solutions.
  • Experience with JavaScript, Python, LISP and ModelBuilder.
  • Experience processing digitised and field-survey data during post-excavation work.
  • Familiarity with drawing software such as Adobe Illustrator.
  • CSCS card.
