Senior Software Engineer, JVM Optimization Platform (Java) – Prague Hybrid
Build scalable Java services for Azul’s JVM performance platform. Develop OptHub backend components, diagnostics, and real-time optimization tools.
Description
- Create and maintain server-side services powering Azul’s JVM performance platform.
- Partner with product managers, performance engineers, and JVM specialists to deliver scalable, reliable backend systems.
- Develop high-performance Java services covering protocols, APIs, data storage, and real-time optimization engines.
- Expand server-side OptHub components that communicate with JVMs across cloud and on-premises environments.
- Investigate complex distributed-systems problems despite limited diagnostic information and demanding performance constraints.
- Build observability, profiling, and diagnostic tools for internal engineering and customer deployments.
- Design benchmarks, analyze profiler results, and apply the resulting performance insights.
- Contribute to technical design reviews and peer code reviews.
Requirements
- At least five years of professional Java development experience focused on backend or server-side systems.
- Thorough knowledge of JVM internals, including memory management, garbage collection, JIT compilation, and threading.
- Production experience building and operating distributed systems and microservices.
- Strong command of Java concurrency, low-latency architecture, and performance optimization.
- Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP and Kubernetes-based container orchestration.
- Ability to design clear APIs and protocols, with a willingness to work close to the underlying system when necessary.
- Proven ability to diagnose difficult, intermittent production problems with incomplete data.
- Familiarity with JVM-related technologies such as JVM agents, JVMTI, ASM, Javassist, or OpenJDK internals.
- Experience in performance engineering, profiling tools such as async-profiler, JFR, or YourKit, or runtime observability.
- Experience with gRPC, Protocol Buffers, WebSockets, or high-throughput messaging systems.
- Experience with process metrics, system observability, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Previous experience in a Java platform, middleware, or infrastructure product company.
