Senior API Architect - SafelyYou Remote

Lead the design and evolution of SafelyYou’s healthcare data APIs, microservices, and streaming infrastructure. Own external data platforms while advancing AI-enabled engineering practices and governance.

Description

  • Design, build, and operate scalable Python and AWS APIs, microservices, and backend platform infrastructure
  • Own the architecture, improvement, and lifecycle of the External Data API
  • Connect SafelyYou’s internal data systems with customer-facing needs
  • Advance data governance tools, including registries and data dictionaries such as the Event Registry
  • Define standards for schema governance, versioning, documentation, and compatibility
  • Evolve internal APIs that expose data-system information to SafelyYou-built applications
  • Create documentation and implementation examples, provide support, and drive adoption of engineering standards
  • Design streaming data pipelines and help move systems from batch processing to real-time architectures
  • Maintain Architecture Decision Records, API specifications, and system documentation
  • Optimize CI/CD pipelines and repository documentation to improve developer workflows
  • Apply AI agent workflows to increase engineering efficiency and monitor industry developments
  • Create AI skills for third-party interactions with SafelyYou APIs and data products
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to align technical strategy with business priorities and support launches and shared initiatives
  • Mentor colleagues, share technical knowledge, and participate in on-call rotations
  • Implement and support the systems you design

Requirements

  • At least seven years of professional software, backend, or platform engineering experience, preferably in a startup setting
  • Expertise designing, building, operating, and scaling RESTful APIs, web services, and distributed backend systems
  • Experience designing and implementing API gateways or management platforms such as Kong Hybrid, Apigee, Gravitee, or comparable systems
  • Strong technical judgment regarding authentication, routing, policy enforcement, observability, and API gateway deployment
  • Advanced Python programming skills with an emphasis on clean, scalable, maintainable backend code
  • Demonstrated experience with streaming architectures and technologies such as Kafka, AWS Kinesis, or Spark Streaming
  • Ability to evaluate architectural and cost trade-offs among batch, streaming, and synchronous processing
  • Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS
  • Working knowledge of DevOps practices, containerization, Kubernetes, and Helm
  • Strong technical communication skills, including experience writing ADRs, API specifications, and detailed architecture documentation
  • Experience managing CI/CD pipelines and improving developer environments
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted and agentic development tools, including coding agents, MCP, AI pair programming, and LLM-based research
  • Advanced experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform
  • Experience designing data models and architectures for ETL/ELT, warehouses, lakehouses, event-driven systems, and backend APIs
  • Strong grounding in data quality, reliability, governance, and scalability
  • Experience with electronic health records, healthcare interoperability standards such as HL7 and FHIR, and privacy regulations such as HIPAA
  • Experience working remotely with distributed, async-first engineering teams
  • Must be located in the United States or Canada
