Mechanical Designer - Idaho Falls Hybrid

Create precision mechanical CAD drawings, parametric models, assemblies, and GD&T documentation for Navarro Research and Engineering’s nuclear, environmental, and technical services work. The full-time hybrid role is remote with onsite work at Idaho National Laboratory as needed.

Description

  • Translate engineering requirements into technical drawings, layouts, blueprints, and simulation models with CAD/CAM/CAE tools.
  • Produce and update 2D drawings, 3D parametric models, assemblies, and supporting documentation from approved engineering inputs.
  • Prepare clear, complete drawings covering geometry, interfaces, materials, finishes, processes, tolerances, inspections, quantities, and assembly relationships.
  • Apply GD&T features and tolerances in compliance with ASME Y14.5-2009.
  • Assess tolerance stack-ups and part-to-assembly interface fit.
  • Use disciplined parametric modeling methods while preserving design intent and well-structured assemblies.
  • Review drawings and models for fit, form, function, completeness, consistency, manufacturability, inspectability, and standards compliance.
  • Validate parts lists, balloons, quantities, references, notes, weld symbols, revisions, and change indicators throughout drawing packages.
  • Protect drawing, model, and reference-file integrity through document, revision, configuration, and records controls.
  • Address technical feedback from engineers, checkers, fabricators, inspectors, and document-change reviews.
  • Work with engineers and other disciplines to clarify requirements, record assumptions, identify missing information, and recommend drawing or modeling approaches.
  • Organize assigned work, communicate progress, and escalate scope, resource, or schedule issues.
  • Help reduce the drafting backlog and mentor drafting staff when requested.
  • Complete additional duties assigned by the BEA Technical Point of Contact.

Requirements

  • At least three years of PTC Creo experience; Creo proficiency is required for immediate contribution.
  • Specialization in precision mechanical design.
  • Practical expertise applying ASME Y14.5-2009 to parts and assemblies, including datum systems, position, profile, orientation, runout, form, composite controls, projected tolerance zones, virtual condition, and bonus tolerance.
  • Ability to explain how GD&T protects function, how requirements will be manufactured and verified, and how to detect overconstrained, underdefined, conflicting, or noninspectable requirements.
  • Advanced PTC Creo and Windchill Data Management skills, or comparable parametric 3D CAD and PDM or Vault experience, plus working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Strong knowledge of drawing layout, orthographic projection, section and detail views, dimensioning, tolerancing, weld symbols, parts lists, ballooning, and revision control.
  • Ability to interpret calculations, specifications, vendor data, design inputs, and redlines and convert them into controlled drawings without altering engineering intent.
  • Experience independently checking drawings and recording clear, technically defensible comments.
  • Working knowledge of materials, fabrication, machining, welding, inspection, and assembly practices and their impact on drawing requirements.
  • Structured problem-solving ability to compare alternatives, identify risks, and reconcile discrepancies across models, drawings, bills of material, and source documents.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including focused questioning, technical explanation, feedback acceptance, and collaboration with colleagues of varied experience levels.
  • Experience using Windchill or a comparable PDM or Vault system in a controlled engineering environment.
  • Experience mentoring drafting staff in parametric modeling, detailing, drawing checks, and GD&T.
  • Familiarity with fabrication, machining, welding, inspection, and assembly practices affecting drawing and model requirements.
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with five years of relevant experience, or ten years of relevant experience without a degree.
  • US citizenship is required because of government contract and/or clearance requirements.
