Edge Computing Software Engineer, Earth Observation at Open Cosmos (Hybrid, UK)

Develop and optimize image-processing pipelines for Nvidia Jetson computers aboard Earth-observation satellites. Improve onboard data workflows across embedded Linux, ARM, and GPU-based systems at Open Cosmos.

Description

  • Develop and maintain data-processing pipelines on satellite-based Nvidia Jetson computers
  • Adapt ground image-processing algorithms for equivalent in-orbit performance
  • Optimize GPU workloads and profile or debug software on ARM and GPU hardware
  • Coordinate with the ground Data Software Engineer to share improvements across onboard and ground systems
  • Create quality checks that ensure satellite data is ready for customers
  • Define and maintain data and metadata standards for onboard and ground outputs
  • Build, test, and deploy workflows in embedded Linux environments
  • Assess new processing methods and data types for onboard use
  • Work with Flight Software, Systems, Operations, and payload partners to align mission requirements with hardware capabilities

Requirements

  • Demonstrated Python expertise for data processing and ability to write clean, testable, maintainable code
  • Practical experience with embedded Linux and ARM-based hardware
  • Experience with GPU computing and performance optimization, including CUDA on Nvidia platforms
  • Ability to profile, debug, and optimize software on resource-constrained hardware
  • Experience converting scientific or analytical code into efficient production software
  • Understanding of how power, memory, storage, and thermal constraints influence software design
  • Experience designing data pipelines, including data formats and metadata standards
  • Familiarity with geospatial or image-data tools such as GDAL, rasterio, NumPy, or Xarray
  • Experience with testing, version control, and code review
  • Ability to communicate clearly and explain technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Legal authorization to work in the UK and an English-language CV submission required.
