Associate Counsel, Liability Defense (GEICO, Memphis Hybrid)

GEICO is seeking an Associate Counsel to defend Tennessee liability lawsuits and insurance claims. The role covers litigation, pleadings, discovery, hearings, and trials.

Description

  • Defend lawsuits brought in Tennessee courts
  • Manage other first-party insurance defense matters
  • Research applicable law and draft briefs, opinions, and memoranda
  • Advise the Claims Department on liability, damages, and claim value
  • Prepare and manage pleadings, motions, and discovery
  • Conduct depositions, pretrial examinations, and examinations under oath
  • Defend assigned cases at trial or dispositive hearings, as appropriate

Requirements

  • At least 2–6 years of related litigation experience is required
  • A Juris Doctor degree is required
  • Admission to the Tennessee Bar is required
  • Maintain an active Tennessee law license in good standing, including applicable Continuing Legal Education requirements
  • Travel as needed for trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
  • Document case files clearly, concisely, and professionally
  • Follow complex instructions, resolve or facilitate conflict resolution, and manage competing priorities effectively
  • Learn and apply substantial technical and procedural information
  • Civil litigation experience is preferred
  • Experience in insurance defense litigation is preferred
  • Communicate professionally in person, by phone, and through written correspondence or email
