Staff Payments Engineer, Core Platform
Lead the architecture and development of Java payment systems supporting sports betting, casino, and commerce businesses. Improve payment routing, reliability, compliance, and transaction costs.

- Own the payments platform architecture, including provider integrations, deposit and withdrawal flows, and services used across Fanatics businesses.
- Build distributed Java and Spring Boot services that handle high transaction volumes with strict requirements for correctness, security, and uptime.
- Develop payment orchestration and routing across processors, acquirers, and payment methods, using approval rates, costs, and provider health to guide routing and failover.
- Design for third-party integration issues such as timeouts, retries, idempotency, duplicate callbacks, partial failures, and reconciliation against provider and bank settlement files.
- Lead the assessment, integration, testing, and rollout of new providers and banking partners.
- Work with Legal, Compliance, and Finance to implement regulatory and card network requirements.
- Partner with Fraud and Risk teams on payment risk signals, chargebacks, and disputes.
- Lower payment costs through routing decisions, provider terms, and less unnecessary movement of funds.
- Establish standards for security, data handling, and reducing PCI scope.
- Lead architecture reviews, design sessions, and incident postmortems, and mentor engineers.
- Work with product, frontend, and mobile teams to deliver consistent payment experiences.
- Set payments technical direction across multiple teams.

- At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
- Experience building and operating production payment systems, including deposit and withdrawal flows, payment gateway or processor integrations, card payments, or ACH.
- Strong understanding of idempotency, reconciliation, and failure handling with third-party providers.
- Experience designing secure, high-scale, low-latency distributed systems.
- Experience with event-driven architectures and message streaming platforms such as Kafka.
- Working knowledge of payment data security and compliance requirements, including PCI DSS.
- Track record of setting technical direction and aligning multiple teams.
- Ability to explain complex technical tradeoffs to engineering, product, finance, and leadership audiences.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, regulated environment with changing priorities.
- Preferred: experience in online gaming, sports betting, fintech, or banking.
- Preferred: knowledge of card networks, acquirers, issuers, interchange, transaction classification, and chargeback processes.
- Preferred: experience with payment orchestration, smart routing, or payments platforms serving multiple business units.
- Preferred: experience integrating banking partners or building account funding and money movement products.
- Preferred: experience with financial reconciliation and settlement reporting.
- Preferred: experience with AWS, Kubernetes, and observability tools such as Datadog, Grafana, or CloudWatch.
- Preferred: interest in developer experience, clean API design, and maintainable systems.
