Staff Backend Developer at PAR Technology (Serbia Remote)
Lead backend development for PAR Technology’s restaurant software and hardware platforms using PHP and Go. Own APIs, architecture, AI-assisted engineering practices, and production reliability.

- Design, develop, and maintain complex backend systems, services, and APIs for integrated ordering, payment, and workflow solutions.
- Shape software architecture and technical designs, including system behavior, dependencies, data flows, and integration points.
- Lead complex features and technical initiatives from requirements and design through implementation, testing, deployment, production validation, and post-release follow-up.
- Proactively identify technical issues, risks, dependencies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Act as a technical resource for developers on architecture, implementation, debugging, performance, and engineering practices.
- Provide technical guidance and recommendations to the Engineering Manager.
- Mentor developers and share technical expertise across the team.
- Review code for correctness, architecture, maintainability, performance, security, and scalability.
- Advance engineering standards, coding practices, development processes, and technical guidelines.
- Use and assess AI-assisted engineering tools to improve development velocity, quality, investigation, debugging, testing, and documentation.
- Help developers establish effective and responsible AI-assisted development workflows.
- Partner with Product, Quality Engineering, Frontend, Architecture, DevOps, and other engineering teams.
- Create and maintain unit, integration, and automated tests.
- Build reliable, backward-compatible, high-performance, and scalable APIs and integrations.
- Find and resolve performance bottlenecks and resource-utilization problems.
- Investigate complex production incidents, determine root causes, and implement corrective and preventive measures.
- Use monitoring, logging, metrics, and observability tools to evaluate system behavior and validate changes.
- Prepare technical estimates and communicate assumptions, dependencies, risks, and uncertainties.
- Set priorities with the Engineering Manager while independently managing technical delivery and dependencies.
- Communicate risks, blockers, and development issues together with proposed solutions or recommendations.
- Work with Git and established software development workflows.
- Expand technical expertise and assess relevant technologies, tools, and engineering practices.
- Reduce technical debt and identify opportunities for modernization, simplification, and architectural improvement.
- Balance rapid delivery with long-term system maintainability.

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Extensive professional experience developing backend software and independently delivering complex production systems.
- Strong proficiency in PHP and modern PHP web frameworks and/or Go (Golang).
- Strong knowledge of relational databases, especially MySQL, including data modeling, query optimization, and performance considerations.
- Substantial experience designing and maintaining APIs and integrations.
- Deep knowledge of software architecture, design patterns, maintainability, scalability, and performance.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, service integrations, asynchronous processing, and failure scenarios.
- Strong understanding of unit, integration, and automated testing practices.
- Strong understanding of production systems, observability, logging, monitoring, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis.
- Strong experience with Git, Linux environments, and modern CI/CD practices.
- Experience working in Agile and continuous delivery environments.
- Proven ability to solve complex technical problems independently with limited supervision.
- Proven ability to own complex features and technical initiatives end to end.
- Practical experience using AI-assisted software engineering tools as a significant part of the development workflow.
- Ability to critically assess, validate, and correct AI-generated code and technical solutions.
- Ability to apply AI to development, investigation, testing, documentation, and problem solving while maintaining quality.
- Strong code review and technical mentoring capabilities.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across Engineering, Product, Quality Engineering, Architecture, and DevOps.
- High ownership, accountability, and self-direction.
- Strong commitment to software quality, performance, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
- Ability to balance technical excellence with business priorities and delivery requirements.
- Legal right to work in Serbia.
