Lead Civil Engineer – Substations and Transmission, Binghamton, NY
Lead civil engineering for substation and transmission infrastructure supporting Avangrid’s New York utility networks. Direct capital projects, engineering studies, contractors, and technical teams.
Description
- Lead civil engineering for high-, medium-, and low-voltage transmission and distribution substation projects
- Produce structural, grading, electrical-clearance, routing, and engineering drawing designs
- Support concrete and steel design work for transmission and distribution line projects
- Partner with construction and design teams on drawings, specifications, and construction work orders
- Manage capital project engineering from scoping and budgeting through conceptual design, contracts, construction, and closeout
- Prepare conceptual designs and supervise external detailed-design providers
- Conduct field circuit inspections and recommend improvements
- Complete special projects, engineering studies, analyses, and equipment or system performance evaluations
- Create alternative design approaches and practical solutions for complex engineering challenges
- Verify compliance with company requirements and local, state, and national codes and standards
- Review and approve engineering deliverables prepared by other engineers
- Provide technical direction, support department engineers, and mentor team members
- Serve as a technical subject matter expert across departments and direct contractors on company policies, standards, and best practices
- Represent the company on regional and national committees as required
- Work independently with minimal supervision
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or electrical engineering with at least seven years of project-delivery experience or experience in a related field
- Relevant network construction and operations experience, including field inspection work
- Theoretical knowledge of planning, operations, engineering design, analytics, modeling, and calculations
- Practical experience in engineering planning, operations, design, and construction
- Ability to document and interpret engineering materials
- Ability to review and approve engineering work against company standards, specifications, and contract requirements
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory standards and requirements
- Professional Engineering License preferred
- Engineering experience that includes electric substation maintenance and field engineering
- Expert or competent proficiency in CAD drafting, company procedures and standards, construction and outage sequencing, industry codes and regulations, project scoping and estimating, technical writing and communication, POLE, PLS-TOWER, FAD Tools, LPILE, Staad Pro, and Civil CAD
- Expertise or competency in foundation design, physical substation design, overhead transmission line layout, surveying, transmission equipment specifications, transmission line maintenance, transmission material selection, transmission service specifications, and underground transmission line design
- Knowledge of engineering standards and specifications through 345kV
