Head of Accounting and Tax

Lead accounting, tax compliance, consolidated reporting, and audits for albo’s regulated fintech group under IFRS and Mexican requirements. Manage the accounting team, controls, and financial systems across Mexico and the UK.

Description

  • Oversee the accuracy and timely delivery of group accounting, financial statements, and tax compliance.
  • Report to the CFO and lead the accounting team.
  • Coordinate with FP&A, Treasury, Legal, Compliance, Operations, and Technology.
  • Complete the monthly close by D+10.
  • Review accruals, journal entries, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Prepare entity-level and consolidated financial statements and reporting packages.
  • Reconcile accounting results with FP&A’s financial model.
  • Manage intercompany reconciliations and eliminations, foreign currency translation, and consolidation for the UK holding company and Mexican entities.
  • Evaluate the accounting and consolidation treatment of financing trusts and special purpose vehicles.
  • Maintain documented group accounting policies under IFRS and reconcile them with Mexican statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Write technical memos on significant judgments and complex transactions.
  • Oversee lending accounting, including accrued interest, effective interest rates, fees, expected credit losses under IFRS 9, write-offs, and recoveries.
  • Reconcile loan servicing data, cash collections, and portfolio balances to the general ledger.
  • Ensure accurate recognition and reconciliation of payment, interchange, subscription, and other service revenue, along with settlement balances, customer funds, and related costs.
  • Work with Treasury and Operations to segregate and reconcile customer and corporate funds.
  • Lead accounting analysis and supporting schedules for debt and financing costs, investments, impairment of goodwill and intangible assets, deferred taxes, and share-based payments.
  • Verify equity and stock option movements against corporate and legal records.
  • Assess new products, partnerships, acquisitions, and funding arrangements before implementation.
  • Manage Mexico’s tax calendar, filings, payments, accounting-to-tax reconciliations, and supporting records.
  • Oversee income tax, VAT, withholding taxes, and tax balances, including refunds and credits.
  • Coordinate transfer pricing studies and documentation.
  • Manage UK and cross-border tax matters with specialist advisers.
  • Oversee the financial and accounting elements of applicable CNBV and Banco de México reporting.
  • Lead the group’s annual audits in Mexico and the UK.
  • Keep records audit-ready throughout the year and resolve technical issues.
  • Coordinate UK statutory filings with Legal and external advisers.
  • Establish controls for cutoff, reconciliations, journal approvals, intercompany transactions, equity and stock options, and supporting records.
  • Monitor audit findings and confirm that corrective actions are completed.
  • Develop the accounting team and set clear accountability and review standards.
  • Manage external accounting and tax providers.
  • Improve ERP workflows, the chart of accounts, and system integrations.
  • Automate recurring reconciliations and reporting while maintaining data lineage, access controls, and review evidence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • At least eight years of relevant experience in accounting, financial reporting, and tax.
  • At least three years of experience leading teams and overseeing month-end close and external audits.
  • Experience at a regulated financial institution in Mexico.
  • Practical knowledge of regulatory accounting and reporting.
  • Strong command of IFRS.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare consolidated financial statements for a multi-entity group.
  • Ability to document and support significant accounting judgments with auditors.
  • Practical experience with Mexican tax.
  • Ability to manage transfer pricing and cross-border matters with specialist advisers.
  • Experience reconciling high transaction volumes across operational systems, banks, subledgers, and the general ledger.
  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills.
  • Hands-on experience with ERP systems.
  • Fluent Spanish and advanced professional English.
  • Ability to discuss technical accounting and audit topics and write explanations for international stakeholders.
  • Record of delivering accurate closes and meeting audit milestones under tight deadlines.
  • Experience with an IFPE, SOFIPO payments, or consumer and SME lending, including IFRS 9 and loan portfolio reconciliations, is an advantage.
  • Experience with UK group audits and statutory accounts, financing trusts, warehouse facilities, or other structured lending arrangements is an advantage.
  • Experience with Oracle NetSuite, Simetrik, SQL, or business intelligence platforms is an advantage.
  • Experience with SOFIPO or banking accounting and regulatory reporting, acquisitions, goodwill impairment, or employee stock option plans is an advantage.
