Embedded Systems Software Engineering Intern in Champaign, IL

Support embedded software development for automotive infotainment platforms using C/C++ and Python. Work on ECU bring-up, workload emulation, diagnostics, and hardware-software integration at Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies.

Description

  • Help design and implement software application frameworks for infotainment and validation systems
  • Assist with hardware bring-up and validation for electrical control units (ECUs)
  • Build test utilities and manufacturing software in C/C++ and Python
  • Emulate vehicle workloads to assess system behavior, power use, and performance
  • Troubleshoot integration issues spanning camera, display, audio, connectivity, and sensor subsystems
  • Gather, interpret, and visualize diagnostic telemetry to support root-cause analysis
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to define requirements and deliver scalable solutions

Requirements

  • Be enrolled full time in a Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related degree program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
  • Demonstrate strong programming ability in C/C++ and/or Python
  • Understand core embedded systems concepts
  • Live in Champaign, Illinois and be able to work from the Research Park office
  • Have exposure to embedded platform architecture, such as GPUs, PCIe, camera pipelines, or high-speed interfaces (preferred)
  • Have prior experience with high-compute platforms such as NVIDIA, Qualcomm, or comparable SoCs (preferred)
  • Have coursework or internship experience with camera, display, or audio subsystems (preferred)
  • Have coursework or internship experience with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or networking interfaces (preferred)
  • Have coursework or internship experience with Linux-based embedded systems (preferred)
  • Have experience using telemetry, data-processing, or analytics platforms such as Databricks or equivalent tools (preferred)
  • Be available from January 11, 2027, through August 13, 2027
  • Be authorized to work for an employer in the United States
