Coastal Reporter-Producer – Oregon Remote

OPB seeks a coastal reporter-producer to cover breaking, daily, and feature news across Oregon Coast communities. The role produces audio, video, photo, radio, and digital journalism for rural audiences.

Description

  • Report and produce breaking and enterprise journalism across audio, visual, and digital platforms focused on coastal Oregon
  • Cover breaking news, daily developments, and longer-term feature stories across varied subjects
  • Research assignments, arrange and conduct interviews, and plan future coverage for the beat
  • Collect field sound, video, and photographs
  • Record and edit reporting with digital audio tools
  • Use social platforms to gather information and engage audiences
  • Coordinate with OPB’s social media team, reporters, and staff across the organization
  • Contribute to local news programming through radio and podcast appearances or interviews with on-air hosts
  • Help bring additional local perspectives into on-air programming
  • Prepare reports for national news programs and newscasts when assigned
  • Take part in fundraising and community outreach activities
  • Meet daily deadlines while balancing multiple reporting priorities
  • Work under the direction of the Regional Managing Editor and Regional Team Lead
  • Travel throughout coastal communities and occasionally elsewhere in Oregon and Washington

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience
  • Three years of equivalent full-time professional journalism experience
  • Experience building and sustaining a reporting beat
  • Ability to establish and maintain reliable sources
  • Strong writing, interviewing, and organizational capabilities
  • Working knowledge of photography, audio, video, and social media for news presentation
  • Ability to work independently from a remote location while collaborating with editors and reporters across the Northwest
  • Commitment to rigorous journalistic ethics
  • Ability to deliver live reports and contribute during breaking news
  • Ability to represent OPB within coastal communities
  • Strong interest in OPB’s public-service mission
  • Interest in evolving news-production workflows, tools, and software
  • Valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license
  • Willingness to travel regionally and across the state
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 10 pounds
  • Preferred qualifications include bureau reporting, digital audio recording and editing, photography or video production, longitudinal story development, community engagement, and bilingual English plus Spanish, Russian, or another language
