Senior Environmental Regulatory Lawyer - UK Hybrid
Provide senior legal counsel to Canal & River Trust on environmental regulation, compliance, litigation and governance. Lead regulatory engagement and legal responses across the Trust’s canal network.

- Deliver senior strategic and operational advice on environmental law to Canal & River Trust’s Executive and Board
- Advise on water resources, flood management, reservoirs, environmental designations, habitats, waste and permitting
- Counsel Senior Managers and the Executive on emerging environmental law, including climate change
- Lead legal responses to serious environmental incidents, investigations and statutory reporting requirements
- Advise on water industry regulation connected with the Trust’s commercial water development activities
- Provide legal guidance on dealings with environmental and water industry regulators and other key stakeholders
- Lead litigation involving the Trust, including abstraction licence appeals, judicial review, civil claims and regulatory enforcement
- Manage and supervise the Principal Environmental Lawyer
- Collaborate with the Senior Regulatory Lawyer
- Coordinate external legal support, including Counsel
आवश्यकताएँ
- Qualified lawyer with 10 or more years’ post-qualification experience, or comparable environmental law experience in private practice or in-house
- Deep expertise in environmental compliance, regulation and litigation
- Demonstrated ability to deliver strategic, proactive, authoritative and timely legal advice
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Practical problem-solving approach aligned with the Trust’s needs
- Ability to assess risk and influence stakeholders effectively
- Strong relationship-building skills with regulators, external advisers and colleagues at every level
- Commitment to leading by example and taking responsibility for safety
- Ability to follow Canal & River Trust health and safety policies and established standards
- Capability to investigate and report incidents, accidents and near misses
- Ability to promote safe equipment use and prepare Risk Assessments and Method Statements
- Planning law experience is advantageous but not essential
